Mr. Stefaan Vossen

The first clinician able to guarantee the results of his work

Stefaan’s results speak for themselves; in 2009, after three years of rigorous analysis of his treatment results, an international insurance company made him the first clinician able to guarantee treatment results.

“Obviously I am very pleased to have received such validation for my work but I do believe that it is testimony only to what proper care can achieve when practiced with diligence, responsibility and humility. Ultimately the fact is that the back pain world is looked at with great scepticism and guaranteeing outcomes just takes away the risk of wasting anymore money on treatments”

Stefaan looks after a large number of athletes and sports people (both individually and via club and team associations) including amongst others professional boxers, rugby and football players, ice-skaters, ballroom dancers, tennis players and golfers, and a number of England and Scotland athletes.

Stefaan has also lectured for the NHS and has been involved in several studies and research papers.

We believe that it is our responsibility, as a trained, qualified, trusted and experienced clinicians to let you know whether or not he can help you, and what it will cost to achieve the best possible result.

EXPERTISE, ACCOUNTABILITY, TRUST and RESULTS: the four principles behind the treatment.

The guarantee in short
If your results don’t match the ones you were told you could get, you get all money spent on treatment back, as long as you followed treatment protocols as advised.

What is not covered in the guarantee:

The refund policy does not include the cost of your examination appointment, any X-rays, MRI scans or the cost of any other tests that were done to assess you as part of your initial examination or later on; neither does it include the cost of any work done (like orthodontic or podiatry appliances or nutritional advice) and any other services not provided by one of our clinicians. Services paid for through insurance policies cannot incur a refund.

What does the Pain Reduction Guarantee offer?

Above all peace of mind and the drive to do something about your condition before it gets any worse and therefore harder and more time consuming to treat (and therefore more expensive).
Secondly it is a reflection of our clinic’s philosophy in so many ways:

It came about from listening to my patients and trying to understand what makes that people make bad choices in their life.

“In fact, I have come to understand that people only make choices they believe to be the right one in the light of what they know or believe. That’s where all the problems start.

Spinal problems and general disorders of the joints and muscles are fairly straightforward to treat some of the time, can be incredibly complex some of the time and are somewhere in between most of the time.

Deciding what is the best thing to do is potentially very complicated and makes that the general information you can find on the web or from your friends works only some of the time, if at all.”

Why CORE Physiatry and Sport

Our clinic’s approach is a way of looking at things that is just that little bit different. We look at your body as a group of systems which works best when every part of it is working at its best. Your knees can’t work well if your hips and ankles aren’t working well, your neck muscles can’t work well when your posture is distorted. It does get a little more intricate when you start to realize that your muscles can’t recover if your diet is not right for you or that your adrenaline levels aren’t right for optimum performance when you are down in the dumps. Simply put we look at YOU!

We will subject you to a series of tests ranging from gait analysis, orthopaedic and neurological testing but will also need to understand about your nutrition and mental focus.

We will use a gait scanner digital imaging and a whole series of muscle and motion analysis testing. We will look at eye movement as it plays an important role in our balance. Poor eye coordination can lead to clumsiness, poor dexterity, slowing down of the reflexes.

We will look at the movement of the jaw and will check flexibility and muscle length.

We will investigate things like your centre of gravity, the way you locate your centre of gravity and the sequence in which you engage muscles to provide movement, … basically lots of things which will give us detailed understanding on how you move and do the things you do.

From then on it is a bit more straightforward: we look at all the things that are abnormal or sub-optimal, correct as many of these problems as possible and get you to retrain your movement patterns.

We offer solutions for those who only require one thing: the best

Malocclusion and posture

The way we bite is something not often associated to the way we walk, stand and generally move. However, the jaw joint or TMJ as it is often referred to, is a very sensitive joint which when dysfunctional can cause interference with the postural reflexes and mechanisms. In consequence people who have abnormal occlusion may alter the way they stand and walk thereby stressing limbs and muscles excessively ultimately causing injury and pain. If this problem remains undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to recurring pain and degeneration.

Athletes and CORE Physiatry: Performing Better

The seasoned athlete knows that absolutely everything is important for top performance as the next person on the starting line, in the ring or on the pitch is just as fit, just as well trained and just as determined as you and being “almost there” is not an option.
At our clinic you will be assessed by a whole series of tests and questionnaires and by the end of that we will know more about you than you ever thought possible. We will know your strong points, your weak points and help you make the best of it all.

Mr. Vossen was a prolific amateur athlete (read: Jack of all and master of none) back in his day competing internationally in Judo, nationally in swimming, badminton, basketball and on track the long jump. Tentatively dabbled in the high jump, never made it to multi-eventing, did some spare-time running including the annual 100km “death march”, a few marathons, sprint and half triathlons and used to enjoy the odd skiing season when life permitted it. Nowadays he is looking after some of this country’s finest athletes and is very proud of having been asked to support youth athletics to minimize injuries in the young and maximize our chances in international competitions.

“The principles are simple, if you move well; you have less pain. Performance improves because you have a fuller range of movement and you are less at risk of injury. If you move badly you have more pain, worse performance and greater likelihood of injury. That is why anybody who is serious about sports should be serious about getting the best out of their whole being. Actually scrap that; everyone should be serious about getting the best out of their whole being.” Mr. Stefaan Vossen

Often the uninitiated misunderstand what role chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists play in the lives of athletes and think that all we are about is “keeping your spine aligned”. Although this is not untrue, it is far more accurate to think of your care as “the clinical science of keeping you moving in good quality motion”.

Good movement is the end product of a number of systems working in harmony. The way you walk, stand, even chew are all relevant to good, injury free performance. It is then you realize that all aspects of you are important to us and understanding and improving you helps you to achieve optimum performance. We will also need to look at the emotional, nutritional as well as the mechanical “you”.

“I’ve been going to see Stefaan for some years now. I’m an ex-international athlete having competed at 3 Olympic Games and won a gold medal in the CommonwealthGames in 1978. I went to Stefaan because I heard he understood sport and thought he would be able to help me with my back which had caused me finally to give up athletics when I was 32 years old. Stefaan not only helped me with my back, he helped improve an old neck injury I got in a car accident and, more recently has advised me as I’ve suffered difficulties in my knees due to arthritis.

Stefaan is always helpful and always ready to fit me in if I have a relapse. It’s good to know I have that support and it helps me manage my condition and get on with my life. Stefaan not only understands how my life as an athlete has shaped the way that my body works now but also how I approach my injuries and ailments in order to get on with my life. I will always be indebted to Stefaan for all he has done for me.”

Stefaan Vossen has been invited to look after Brussels-based Champion League team Football Club Anderlecht and Leicester Cricket Club players. Looks after individual athletes from multiple Athletics, Rugby and Football clubs.

The service I offer here is complex, but can be put down in few sentences: your body is your tool. I help it perform better naturally, that way we can protect and lengthen your career.”  Stefaan Vossen

I first met Stefaan when I needed help with a back problem that I developed whilst training for the hammer. I’ve been a hammer thrower for many years and have competed at international level. Stefaan was able to fix my back problem quickly but also gave me very sound advice on how to prevent it happening again. Although he had never treated a hammer thrower before he soon understood the mechanics of my event and how I could train better to achieve more and stay healthier at the same time.

Since those early days Stefaan has treated a number of other underlying problems that I had built up in my years of throwing and he has always born in mind my athletic ambition and desire to train and throw, advising me on how best to work around issues whilst they existed and maintain them once improved. There is no doubt that Stefaan has helped me extend my athletic career and throw further. I will always be extremely grateful to him for what he’s done for me.”

“To me our treatment isn’t only emergency medicine, it is mainly about enabling biomechanical health and wellbeing but it is often only when in crisis that we realise how valuable the freedom to move is”

Stefaan’s philosophy is simple:

“90% of the time patients come to me for the first time when they’re in crisis – in pain or in desperation, because they feel they’ve been everywhere for help, but got nowhere.

Firstly, I try to really understand patients and keep digging and asking ‘why’ until the cause of their problem becomes clear. Then everything becomes easy; all you have to do is  is take the cause away and let things fix themselves. Sadly, they’ve regularly never been asked these important questions before. After that they just let me look after them as little as necessary to enable them to do the things they want to do.”

Core Wellness is the embodiment of this thinking: “When you understand the different components of health and wellbeing, these questions and answers usually tell you everything you need to know, in order to diagnose and decide on what treatment is needed.”
